Well I never thought it would happen this soon. Granted I have used my PS3 quite alot and have owned it since launch, but today it broke. It started with just showing the background screen without any of the menus (seems like a HD problem). I did the hard reset by holding the power button down on restart and waiting for the second beep and then letting go. This should have set it back to the normal AV outputs (as I had it hooked up via HDMI), but now the screen was black.
Tried many combinations of cables, inputs, restarts, but it seems the HD died. Next step is that I will try to put in another HD and see if I can get it to format. (So this ends up being an opportunity to upgrade the drive from the original 80G to a larger laptop hard drive). I really did not want to lose all of my saves though (including the current game I was playing, Suikoden Tactics which is actually a PS2 game played on my PS3).
Will update this post as I go through the self-repair options with sending it in to Sony at $150 as my last resort.

- I have been gaming since I was 4. Back in the days of 2D graphics on PC (which is still later than some of you on Genesis or Pong!). When the PS2 came out, I established quite a large collection of games -over 150. DS, DS-Lite and PSP were used on the road whenever I could, but the greatest day was getting the PS3 on launch day. I became part of the legendary COD3 online groups where everyone that got a rare PS3 back then was on the same game. I joined an online clan called B3YOND and zoomed to the top of the rankings while improving my gaming style and learning from some of the best players online. Later as I got into Rainbow Six Vegas online, I managed to get ranked #8 out of about 70,000 and also played on a couple of very competitive clans. Then came Xbox and wii last Xmas. The best way to get better is to play with great players and I keep trying to improve every day. One thing is for sure: With interactive online gaming, the community of gamers across the globe continues to grow. I hope to help others by letting them know what I think about certain games I have played to help weed out the good from the not-so-good games. GiftedGamer 2009
